First Grade Happenings from 10/18- 10/22

What a fantastic week of learning our First Graders had!  A special thank you goes out to the Farr Family for donating vines, flowers, pumpkins, squash and corn from their farm!  Hands-on learning is a vital part of our instruction.  This made our study of the pumpkin life cycle so exciting!

FRIDAY LETTERS ARE COMING HOME!

Today our learners wrote their first Friday Letters to their families.  These letters tell a little snippet about our week.  They are a great way for families to learn more about our week and watch our learners progress as writers throughout the year.  Sometimes our Friday Letters might be a bit tough to read. If you can't read your child's letter, just ask them to tell you about their week.  Please write a note back to them, they love to read your letters! Help your learner remember to return the notebook by next Friday so they can write back to you.

Here are a few other things about our week:

  • We explored the pumpkin life cycle

  • Worked on vowel sounds in CVC words

  • We added the sight words - that, to, one, are, you

  • Learned the properties of triangles and quadrilaterals

  • We added brave beginnings to our narratives

  • Brought home our book bags (these will come back and forth to school)

  • We wrote our first Friday Letters

  • Add more sight words

  • Add exciting words to our narratives

What an incredible week of learning!  We would like to  send a special thank you to our UVM student teachers for putting on an amazing puppet show on animal habitats.  Students then made miniature animal habitats in the woods!  We learned that habits require 4 things, a food source, water, protection and a place to raise young.  In addition to our Through the Woods Thursday, here are other highlights from our week.

This week we:

  • Started our new handwriting program

  • Continued to work on segmenting and blending CVC words

  • Added details to our personal narrative stories

  • Introduced our poetry and song binder ( a favorite)

  • Learned new sight words - the, and, came, out, up, all (paper cards of these came home)

  • Wrapped up our first math unit on addition and subtraction strategies

  • Wrapped up our life cycle of the monarch butterfly unit

Next week we will:

  • Work on short vowel sounds and how to isolate them

  • Add more sight words

  • Learn how to focus on a small moment in writing

  • Add new reading strategies for solving unfamiliar words

  • Start our geometry unit

  • Work on how to be a good partner and a good sport
