Knowing Your Zones

Today Mrs. T came into our classroom to teach us a little bit more about our energy levels.  Learners are using the zones of regulation chart to help them learn to recognize when their bodies have to much energy or not enough energy. We are learning strategies to help keep us in the green zone!! The green zone is just right for learning.  Throughout the day we do check ins to see where our energy is at!

A Visit With Gerald!

Today First Graders got a very special visit from one of our favorite book characters, Gerald the Elephant!  We made our own costumes to join in the fun!  Each learner created a costume to show which Mo Willems  character was their favorite.  We also took a turn at writing our own Piggie and Elephant stories! RES kids earned this day by showing expected behavior all around our school.  Thank you Mr. Berry for dressing up today! We had a BLAST!

A Balancing Act in Math!

Today our First Graders played a new math game! We used our number cards to make equations.  Then we found a 10 + equation that totaled the same number.  An example might be 5+8 =10+ 3.
Our learners were amazing at this game!  The facts really added up fast!

Book Shopping

Did you know that reading "just right" books is the best way to become a better reader?  Today we started off with a little just right book shopping! Every learner selected 10-14 books they were interested in. It is so exciting to find new books and topics to read about. Do you have just right books at home? Feel free to email Mrs. Hackett if you would like to borrow a bag of just right books over vacation.

It Looked Like Split Milk-Our Opinions

First Graders are starting a new writng unit all about writing reviews and our opinions! We decided to start our unit off by reading the book It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles Shaw. During the story everyone had a chance to say what they thought the white images looked like and why! First graders are great at giving you their opinion!
Then we made our own spilt milk art. We used white paint and string to make abstract designs.

Then we finished the writing project by sharing what our spilt milk drawings were. Each learner gave their reasons why. What an amazing way to start a new unit of writing.

Take a look at some of our writing. Below are a few samples. Please look in the hallway for all of our pieces.

First Grade Loves Green Eggs and Ham!

First Graders celebrated April Fools' Day in a Seuss-tacular way! We read the Lorax and shared ways that we could help make the Earth a better place! We created our very own Loraxes. Then we made green eggs and ham! Delicious! Thank you to all the families that donated supplies for our feast!
