Jericho Settler's Farm Field Trip

Today we got the chance to visit Jericho Settler's Farm and learn more about plants and farming!

First our group got to help plant onions! We also learned how farmers trap insects, like the Leek Moth, to keep them out of the crops!

Then we got to make a plant burrito to eat! Each part of our delicious burrito was a different plant part!
Our last station was a farm scavenger hunt! We got the opportunity to explore the farm, including our favorite spot, the pigs!! Thank you to everyone who helped out today!

Move Up Day!

This year at RES “Move Up” will be on June 6th. Our scholars will get the opportunity to meet their teacher for the next year and check out their classroom.  They will bring home a letter that day to share their placement with you.  We are so excited for our scholars to get a peek into next year!

First Grade Explores Google Earth

Today in first grade we had to chance to explore Google Earth!  Each student has been working on learning their address and phone number.  Today each learner made an address page that contained their name, address and phone number, plus a drawing of their home.  We then used those sheets to help us put our addresses into Google Earth! Everyone loved flying around and looking at Richmond and all of our homes from an airel view!  All of our learners were eager to share this with their families! A special thank you goes out to Mr. Milazzo for helping out in our room this afternoon. We enjoyed having you visit with us!

Researching Community Helpers

Today in the computer lab our first graders researched community helpers and their roles in our community.  A few of our favorites were a veterinarian, a pizza maker and a fire fighter.  This is a great time to share information about your own career with your child! They love to learn more about how family members support our community.

Parts of a Story

In first grade we are working on learning more about story elements.  This week we are reviewing, Beginning, Middle and End.  We have worked on this concept all year, but now we are really searching for details and using evidence from the book to back up our claims.  Today we read Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems.  Here are a few pictures from his book. Ask your child to tell you about the beginning, middle and end of the story.
Here are a few pictures of our first graders hard at work.  They are documenting their ideas about Knuffle Bunny. Way to go learners!

PJ Day and Crazy Hair Day Tomorrow!

Exploring 3D Shapes

Our first graders are learning all about 3D shapes.  We are learning what the face and footprint of a block is.  We learned that triangular prisms have 5 faces, while rectangular prisms have 6.  In the pictures learners are using different shaped prisms to extend the wall, while others are taking a turn matching prisms to face footprints.

Fantastic 4 Winds

Today was our last 4 Winds of the year.  Our first graders were pretty sad to hear that, but we had a fabulous time today.  We learned all about amphibians and how they change!  Students had the chance to try and catch a fly with special "toungnes". We also got to check out real tadpoles.
A special thank you goes out to our 4 Winds parents for making the program so amazing for our students.

Congratulations to all our first graders for reading 150 hours! We are so proud of you!  Here are a few pictures from our celebration.  We enjoyed playing all kinds of board and card games.  Thank you to everyone who brought in a game. A special thank you to Mrs. Kreigh and Mr. Berry for coming in to play games with us.  Stay tuned because we are working towards 200 hours!
