Word Mapping, Sunny Skiing, and Nonfiction Writing!

Learning highlights from the week:

Math- First graders have been working on True/False problems. Next week they will start to solve missing addend problems.  Example:  Sam had 6 marbles in a jar.  Sally gave him some more and now Sam has 11 marbles.  How many marbles did Sally give him?  Students have talked about how to set up this type of problem in an equation ( 6 + _ = 11) and next week we’ll discuss how this can be turned into a subtraction equation.

Second graders Second graders have been working with numbers over 100 adding and subtracting multiples of 10.  They are getting very good at it!

ReadingWe will be wrapping up our non-fiction reading unit in the next 2 weeks.  We also continue to work on our decoding strategies including consonant blends, long vowel teams.  Some students are enjoying nonfiction book clubs with National Geographic Readers, others are reading nonfiction decodable texts.

Writing-  We will finish up our information books soon and can’t wait to share them with our families!

Mindfulness-  Our theme for the month of February is Kindness.  Kindness to self and kindness to others.  Today during our all school morning meeting we were given wonderful painted hearts from the kindergarteners and we used them to make a bulletin board.  It was a wonderful way to start a Friday!

UVM Basketball Adventure and More!

Learning highlights from the week:

Math- The first graders are still continuing their focus on place value and its use in adding and subtracting within 20.   I am linking some fun games you can play at home to help.  All you need is a deck of cards (Face cards and 10’s removed) Partners to 10 are ( 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, etc).

Second graders are finishing up a unit assessment and beginning work on place value over 100.  This includes adding and subtracting 10’s from any hundreds number.

ReadingThe work on nonfiction continues.  We are reading a variety of nonfiction titles and learning about our world, animals, dinosaurs, etc.  Along with this study of nonfiction, we continue our work on phonics and comprehension.

Writing-  Students are working on their animal research books. This week we started the chapter on the body of their animal.  Everyone is so proud of their work. I can’t wait to share it all with you. We will be having families in to share our work before February vacation. I will have more details on this soon.

Mindfulness-  We are continuing our work on self-regulation. Students are practicing strategies to maintain focus and reduce impulsive behaviors. We are working on keeping things in our “think bubble” instead of blurting them out.
