First Grade at Snow Motion
Our First Graders headed to Cochran's Ski Area on Friday for our first Snow Motion time. Students of all abilities hit the slopes for some skiing and riding! Some students were brand new to skiing or snowboarding. I was so proud of the effort each student gave! Our next Snow Motion day is Friday!

First Grade Can Map This or That!
First Graders are starting to wrap up our mapping unit. We have learned basic cardinal directions, what maps are used for, and key features of maps. Our favorite part has been making our own maps. We have used plain paper, graph paper and even the computer to design our own maps. Our learners loved using the map tool on the PBS Kids website called The Cat in the Hat Can Map This and That. Click the link below to give it a try! You can map both indoor areas as well as fun play yards too!

Word Detectives
First Graders were welcomed back to school with a special surprise. They received a special envelope from the Super Secret Detective Agency (SSDA) asking them to become Word Detectives. Thi s is a big job and after much thought we decided to take on the job. Below is our most recent mission:
Take a look at these word detectives using magnifying glasses to look closely at words. Nothing is going to stop these readers!

Holidays Around the World- Israel
Our First Graders hopped on another flight and headed to Israel to celebrate Hanukkah! After a tour of the country, we learned our favorite place to visit in Israel was the Dead Sea. Did you know that you can float in the Dead Sea without treading water? People travel from all over the world just to soak in the warm water. Ask you child why it's called the Dead Sea.
After our tour, we played the Dreidel Game, sang songs, and made our own Menorahs. It was a great stop! Next were are headed to Germany! Stayed tuned!

Holidays Around the World- 1st Stop- Norway!
Our First Graders are learning about how people all over the world celebrate holidays in December. We will explore a variety of traditions and cultures as part of our Community Unit- Our World! Students will also be learning basic mapping skills as we venture around the world.
To begin our unit, all students applied for RES passports. Students needed to know their address and well as their birthday to complete the application. Once the passports were issued we were ready to travel. Our first stop, Norway! Students boarded our plane and watched a short in flight movie that taught us all about traditions from Norway including Santa Lucia Day. Students colored a map and flag for the country and then created their own Santa Lucia crown as a souvenir. Stay tuned for our next stop!
