Clay Pots, Kazoo Parade and Engineering!

Learning highlights from the week:

MathFirst graders are working on adding and subtraction strategies using place value for numbers within 120.

Second graders continue to work on subtraction, and they are now subtracting numbers over 100.  Here’s an example of how they’re doing it in case you want them to show you!

845 - 227=  845- 200 = 645

         645 - 20 = 625

         625 - 7 = 618

Reading-   We have begun end of year assessments and continue to work on author’s craft while reading.

Writing-This week our focus has been wrapping up our book reviews.  We are in the revising and editing phase.

Mindfulness-  We continue to talk a lot about how to keep our bodies in the “green zone” during the school day. This week had a bumpy beginning.  We had a hard time staying in that green zone.  But, I’m happy to say that by Thursday we were doing a great job!

Sunny Days, Reading Outside and a Visit with Trooper Cody

Learning highlights from the week:

MathFirst graders continue to work on their unit on place value.  They are learning to add and subtract 2 digit numbers using tens and ones and the 120 chart.

Second graders continue to work on subtraction, and they are now adding numbers over 100.  Here’s an example of how they’re doing it in case you want them to show you!

345 + 223=       300 + 40 + 5  358 + 437 =   300 + 50 + 8

 +  200 + 20 + 3              + 400 + 30 + 7

                  500 + 60 + 8 = 568     700 + 80 + 15 = 795

Reading-   We continue to talk about why authors make the decisions they do.  We’re asking questions like, “what does the author do to keep us interested?”.  We are also continuing to identify characters and their traits.   We will soon be starting our end of year reading assessments.

Writing- We are wrapping up our opinion writing unit.  Students will be finishing up their book reviews this week.

Mindfulness-  We continue to talk a lot about how to keep our bodies in the “green zone” during the school day.  The “green zone” is when we are regulated and our prefrontal cortex is able to function at its best, helping us to be good thinkers and learners.

Book Clubs, Opinion Writing and Outside Play in the Rain!

Learning highlights from the week:

MathFirst graders are busy adding and subtracting using place value concepts.  This work helps solidify place value which is so critical in second grade.   Second graders have been working on subtraction of 2 digit numbers.  Students took an assessment on this skill on Thursday and everyone did an amazing job!  On Friday they worked on using expanded form to add 3 digit numbers.

Reading-   Students have been getting back into the swing of reading this week after a week off.  All students are in book clubs and learning about characters.

Writing-We are beginning to wrap up our persuasive writing. Students selected their favorite book and are writing a book review.

Mindfulness-  May’s theme during mindfulness is perseverance.  We will be talking about how to keep going, even when work is difficult.
