Week 2 Adventures- Making Our Classroom a Community!

Learning highlights from the week:

  • Math- First graders explored counting boxes and 10 frames while second graders explored ways to get to 10 and 12 with multiple addends and filled out pattern block shapes.  Everyone worked on getting to know our math community and learning the expectations of math time.

  • Reading- We began our reading instruction this week working as a whole group. We are working on both phonemic awareness and phonics.  Phonemic Awareness is the understanding that spoken words are made up of individual sounds, called phonemes. Phonemic awareness is oral and auditory, and the focus is on the sounds in words.  Phonics on the other hand is both visual and auditory. The focus of phonics instruction is letter-sound relationships.  Although this is review for many students, both phonics and phonemic awareness are critical to becoming a successful reader.

  • Community- We continue to work on our classroom expectations, whole body listening and using our arrow eyes. Taking the time to explicitly teach these skills help us to come together as a classroom community and keep our days running smoothly.

We enjoyed an all school celebration with extra recess and popsicles!
