Getting Outdoors For Our Week of 12/20-12/23

Although this was a short week we packed it full of fun.  Your student brought home a few handmade gifts for your family.  They worked hard and are so proud of their work. 

This week we:

  • Learned about the Shortest Day of the Year and how they celebrate it in Sweden

  • Created bird feeders for our outdoor classroom

  • Practiced True or False math equations

  • Finished our How To Books!

  • Celebrated following school expectations with pj and movie day

  • Made gifts for our families!

  • Read lots of stories written by Jan Brett

  • Used Art Hub for Kids to learn to draw all sorts of things!


When we return from our break we will:

  • Start new units on Reading and Writing Nonfiction

  • Learn about animals and how they adapt to their environment

  • Add more glued sounds and blends to our phonics skills

  • Build stamina in our reading to self time (best way to become a better reader!)

  • Learn to count larger quantities

  • Work on skip counting 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s  on and off the decade

World Travels and Adventures From 12/13-12/17

 


Here are the highlights from our week:

This week we:

  • Added endings to our How To Books

  • Learned about suffix s

  • Flew to Sweden and learned about Santa Lucia

  • Learned about the Northern Lights

  • Read books by Author Jan Brett

  • Learned how to read words in a “snap” from our word wall

  • Learned about True/False equations in math

  • Learned that the equal sign means the same as 


Next week we will:

  • Fly back to the United States

  • Finish our How To Books

  • Learn about the Winter Solstice

  • Add more sight words to our wall

  • Create a special gift for our families

  • Practice True/False equations

Outdoor Fun and World Travels for 12/3-12/9


As the weather gets snowier, please make sure your learner has outdoor clothing. Please label all of your child’s winter clothing, including each glove/mitten. If it doesn’t fit in a backpack, you can send it in a reusable grocery bag.  I do have some available in our classroom if they need one. This makes packing easy for your student. It is also important that students learn to put their gear on by themselves. I am able to help with small things, but there are too many kiddos for me to be able to help at every stage of dressing for the outdoors. If you are missing any item and need something, I have extras in the classroom!  


Here are the highlights from our week:  

This week we:

  • Learned about using a compass rose on a map 

  • Traveled to Germany

  • Made shoes for St. Nicholas

  • Worked on writing our how to books

  • Added the glued sounds an, am and all 

  • Worked on strategies to add 3 numbers

  • Worked on reading fluency (please keep practicing at home)


Next week we will:

  • Start solving true/false math equations

  • Learn to select the easiest strategy to add multiple numbers

  • Add finishing touches to our how to books

  • Learn about suffix s and the sounds in can make /s/ and /z/

  • Travel to Sweden and Norway

  • Continue working to meet our reading goal!  

  • Learn to use a map key


We have read 42 hours so far!  Only 18 to go to meet our goal!  Please keep the reading sheets coming in!  Have your learner color in one pumpkin or penguin (newest sheet to print if you need it) for every 15 minutes they practice reading.  It is the best way for your learner to become a better reader!

Amazing Adventures 11/29-12/3

 

Here are the highlights from our week:  

This week we:

  • Learned Cardinal Directions- (Here is our Song)

  • Flew to Israel to celebrate Hanukkah 

  • Mapped our flight across the Atlantic

  • Sent our Friday Letters from Israel

  • Had a visit from Cobble Hill Kennels

  • Played the Dreidel game and collected a souvenir dreidel and coin

  • Started our Word Detective Missions

  • Added the glued sounds /an/, /am/

  • Learned to solve problems with 3 addends


Next week we will:

  • Learn about map legends and keys

  • Gather more Word Detectives Missions 

  • Learn to try multiple strategies to solve unknown words

  • Fly to Germany to learn about German Holiday Traditions 

  • Learn new strategies to to add 3 numbers

  • Add a new glued sound /all/ to our spelling routine
