It's A Girl!

Mrs. Hackett's 1st Grade Class is proud to announce the hatching of our first butterfly! It was a girl!  We know it's a girl because female Monarchs don't have black spots on their bottom wings.  Here is a picture of both a girl and a boy.  Your child is an expert! They can't point out the spots for you.

After our butterfly had time to dry and practice flapping her wings, it was time to say goodbye.  Our class sang a goodbye song and wished her a safe journey south!

Tech Integration In Math!

Today first graders got a chance to work in the  computer lab on our tech and math standards!  Learners used shape software to design and solve puzzles.  On our next visit, learners will create a pattern template for building.  Then they will get the opportunity to trade patterns and try and fill each other's shape templates.  I am so proud of how independent our first graders have become! Take a look at the projects they are working on!

From Peel to Core- Apple Products!

Today in first grade students learned first hand how to make a product from apples. Learners worked to peel and slice their apple! Then the apples went right into the crockpot! We added a little maple syrup, cider and cinnamon and let them cook for a few hours! It was delicious!  We sent the recipe home, we hope you like it too!

Shaping Up in Math

We are so excited to be starting our next math unit, Making Shapes-Geometry! 

Learners have been searching for shapes all around our classroom! We even built a giant triangle out of string! It took our entire class to make the triangle complete.

Today our class worked on ways to fill a shape. They used pattern blocks to fill a larger shape. When you are out and about, ask your child what kind I shapes they see aroud them! 

1st Grade Observers

Things are changing in our caterpillar tank!! Two of our caterpillars have climbed to the top of the tank and made their J! We pulled out our science journals and made another observation. We can't wait to see what changes await tomorrow. 

RES Library Needs Volunteers

The RES library is looking for volunteers during kindergarten library classes. Library volunteers help our scholars find books and other materials, read aloud with scholars, and check books in and out. Heads or Tails

Today students used pennies to figure out multiple equations of a sum in the game Heads or Tails. Students knew the total number of pennies they started with, then they gave their cup a spill and counted the heads and tails.  Students filled out a data table examining different combinations of the total number of pennies!  It was great to see students solving so many problems! 

Next time you use coins at the store, let your child get a good look at them. Share how much each coin is worth and let them watch you count your change! You'll be amazed how quickly they learn the coin names and how much each is worth!
