It Looked Like Split Milk-Our Opinions

First Graders are starting a new writng unit all about writing reviews and our opinions! We decided to start our unit off by reading the book It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles Shaw. During the story everyone had a chance to say what they thought the white images looked like and why! First graders are great at giving you their opinion! 

Then we made our own spilt milk art. We used white paint and string to make abstract designs.

Then we finished the writing project by sharing what our spilt milk drawings were. Each learner gave their reasons why. What an amazing way to start a new unit of writing.

First Grade Loves Green Eggs and Ham!

First Graders celebrated April Fools' Day in a Seuss-tacular way! We read the Lorax and shared ways that we could help make the Earth a better place! We created our very own Loraxes. Then we made green eggs and ham! Delicious! Thank you to all the families that donated supplies for our feast!

Force and Motion with Cars

First Graders have been exploring force and motion concepts.  Recently we have been learning how to conduct a fair test.  Learners took 3 match box cars and had to figure out how to fairly tell which car was the fastest.  Students worked in teams to ensure the test was fair.  Then they rated their cars fastest to slowest. All students shared their results from their test.  Ask your child the name of their fastest car!

Force and Motion With Dr. Seuss

Our first grade computer lab time was Seuss-tacular today! Learners visited the website Seussville and played the Green Eggs and Ham game. In the game, learners use pushes and pulls to move the the egg to the ham.  It is a great way to experiment with the forces concept.  Students could choose between over easy or hard boiled for a difficulty level. Seussville is a free website that has lots of fun games and stories for our learners to explore. 

1st Grade Scientists At Work

This week our first graders started to tackle our new science until on force and motion.  Learners used the scientific method to set up and conduct an experiment.  The formed a hypothesis comparing a light ball and a heavy ball of the same size.  They asked which would be easier to move using a push of air.  Ask your learner about the results of their experiment!

Donald Duck Shows 1st Graders All About Force and Motion

Today First Graders learned all about force and motion from a Donald Duck cartoon!  We used a clip and watched all the things that pushed and pulled Donald and Pluto around the lake.  Learners wrote down the action and the force behind the motion.  Then learners shared their writing with their table!  We found over 40 different push or pull movements in the clip!  Thank you Donald and Pluto for helping to teach us all about force and motion. 

10's Go Fish

First Graders are working on getting their 10's Facts fast as lightning! What better way to practice than with a game? So, today we played 10's Go Fish. It is similar to the good old card game we all know, but instead of matching like cards, you have to match 10 Facts.  What a fun afternoon!
