Problem Solving Strategies for Grade 1 Math

Here are a few helpful strategies we have been using to solve our math problems in first grade. To keep those math facts fluent, try asking your child math facts when you're in line at a store or in the car! Counting forwards and backwards is a great way to help support your growing mathematician too!

Class Look-A-Like Day!

For class look-a-like day we chose to wear red shirts and darks pants!! Thank you to all our families for helping their child get ready for this special day!

Is It A Keeper?

Today first graders took great care to measure their catch!  They measured fish with inch rods to see which ones were "keepers"!  Students worked hard to keep their inch rods straight and have accurate measurements!

Penguins, Penguins, Penguins!

In first grade we are listening to Mr. Popper's Penguins as our read aloud chapter book!

This book has inspired our first graders to want to learn more about penguins!  So, to honor their request, we are starting a short focused research project on penguins!
We started by figuring out what we know and what we want to learn about penguins. We created a Can, Have, Are page about penguins.

-Next, first graders started to collect pengiun facts!
Here are our next steps:

-Students will compare fiction penguin texts to nonfiction texts, learning more about the author's purpose for writing each text.

-Students will compile their facts into a short nonfiction write up about penguins!

We are so excited to share our facts! Here are a few pictures of us doing research with the emergent reader database Pebble Go!

Ask your child to share a penguin fact with you!

Ice = Indoor Recess

Although the sparkling ice is pretty, it is keeping us inside at recess.  Our playground is covered in the slippery stuff, so we are making the most of what we've got.  The kids have been enjoying our new classroom games and playing with Legos and Playmobil people.

Data Presentations

Today we shared all our hard work!  First grade teams did an excellent job sharing their data reports!  Way to go!

Survey Says?

During math our first graders are learning all about data.  We are working on how data is collected, interpreted and represented.  Yesterday students worked in partnerships to come up with a questions to ask their peers.  They created a plan on how the information we be collected and howthey would ensure that each student answered the question.

Today we put our plan into action.  Here are a few pictures of students asking their survey questions.
